New modelling from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has found that up to 100,000 older people could be pushed into poverty as a direct consequence of changes to the Winter Fuel Payment by 2030. Celebrity campaign urges Pension Credit sign ups

Brian Cox, Jane Asher and Sue Holderness have teamed up with Independent Age to urge older people to check their Pension Credit eligibility before the 21st December. This is the cut-off date for the Winter Fuel Payment. The campaign was covered by MailOnline, Express, Birmingham Live, STV and various regional outlets.

Just 7,000 physical bank branches remain in the UK and it is leaving older people facing digital exclusion, a new report has found. Joanna Elson CBE, our Chief Executive, is included in a Big Issue article explaining why older people and particularly those in financial hardship must retain access to physical banks in order to manage their money.

Winter Fuel Payment cut confirmed in Budget

Independent Age's reaction to the Autumn Budget was covered in three articles in the Express and also included in the iNews live blog. The statement used in the articles expressed great concern about the Government's continuation of plans to means-test the Winter Fuel Payment but also acknowledged that there were some welcome announcements. Labour must increase Housing Benefit in Budget

Ahead of the Budget, Independent Age's Chief Executive Joanna Elson CBE wrote an opinion piece featured in the Big Issue calling on the Government to protect older private renters from homelessness. This can be achieved by committing to uprating Local Housing Allowance annually, so that Housing Benefit can cover the rent of at least the cheapest 30% of local private rental markets. Read the full article here.
