In response to reports of closures of many public toilets, Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Independent Age said:

"While we understand councils are under financial pressure, there is no excuse for councils closing public toilets without having a well-publicised, well-managed community toilet scheme that encourages local shops, bars and businesses to make their facilities available to people who need them. Publicly accessible toilets are an important service to people of all ages but are especially vital ones to many older people. The absence of toilet facilities can mean that older people lack confidence to go out and become more isolated and less able to contribute to their neighbourhoods and communities."
