Responding to comments on the future of health and social care funding by NHS Chief Executive Simon Stevens, Janet Morrison, chief executive of Independent Age, said:

“Simon Stevens is right to say we need a national consensus on ‘properly resourced and functioning social care services’. These issues are just too important to be left to the usual Westminster party politics.

“In the face of a rapidly ageing population, ever increasing demand on services and shrinking budgets, we need an honest and frank debate. That is why we support calls for a cross-party commission to consider the health and care system we will need in the future and how we will pay for it.”
