In response to the Cold Weather Plan for England, published by Public Health England, the Local Government Association and NHS England, Simon Bottery, Director of Policy at Independent Age said:

“Older people are particularly vulnerable during the cold winter months so we welcome this Cold Weather Plan for England. There were 24,000 excess winter deaths in 2011/12, which is unacceptable. Older people have to keep their room temperatures higher than younger people to stay healthy and are likely to spend a lot more time indoors. Combined with increased fuel prices, older people on low incomes can really struggle when it’s cold.
