What: Four-day walk along the Ceredigion Coastal Path in aid of Independent Age

Where: From Mwnt to Aberystwyth

When: Friday 8 June to Monday 11 June 2012

June 2012 is the date for an exciting new sponsorship event in the North West. Called the Independent Age Coastal Path Challenge, this four-day walk along the Ceredigion Coastal Path will cover a total of approximately 50 miles from Mwnt to Aberystwyth.

The daily stages are as follows:

Friday 8 June: Mwnt to Llangrannog (9.8 miles)

Saturday 9 June: Llangrannog to New Quay (9.4 miles)

Sunday 10 June: New Quay to Llanrhystud (13.9 miles)

Monday 11 June: Llanrhystud to Aberystwyth (10.6 miles)

Entrants may choose whether they wish to walk for four, three or two days. Participants will be asked to raise at least £500 for a four-day walk; £375 for a three-day walk or £250 for a two-day walk and there is an entry fee of £50. All funds raised will go to Independent Age, the charity which supports thousands of older people across the UK and Republic of Ireland, tackling poverty and loneliness by offering information, advice and friendship.

The scenery in this part of Wales is spectacular – Cardigan Bay is renowned for its marine life and walkers can expect to see dolphins, porpoise and grey seals from commanding views along the cliff tops as the route follows the coast most of the way. Wildflowers are in abundance along the edges of the path and red kites and rare species of marine birds make their home in the area which is one of the many reasons Cardigan Bay is a Special Area of Conservation. Our base for the event will be the charming Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron, which has many buildings of architectural interest. Secluded coves, picturesque harbours and marinas form a backdrop to the walk and the area around Aberaeron is perfect for exploring at the end of each day.

Notes to editor

Details of the walk

• Aberaeron will be the base for the event. Walkers will need to book their own accommodation - there is plenty of holiday accommodation in and around this attractive location.

• Transport will be provided from Aberaeron to the daily start points along the route and return each evening.

• Some parts of the path are steep and rugged and walkers need to be reasonably fit and probably used to hiking regularly in the countryside. The terrain ranges from easy to moderate and can be challenging in parts, but the daily mileage should comfortably be accomplished by everyone with a reasonable degree of fitness.
