Commenting on new research published by Which?, which shows almost nine in 10 council areas across England could see a shortfall in care home places emerging by 2022 unless urgent action is taken, Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Independent Age, the older people’s charity, said:
“This research is yet more evidence of a social care system which is straining at the seams as the ageing population continues to grow. While this alarming research shows the shortfall in care home places predicted by the end of this Parliament, we know there are already many older people and their families who are struggling to find a good quality care home.
“Our analysis earlier this year highlighted the fact that, in some areas such as Stockport or Salford, families are facing little choice of quality care, with 3 in 5 homes rated not good enough by the Care Quality Commission. The long-awaited Green Paper on social care must urgently set out decisive proposals that show this government is ready and willing to finally fix the social care system.”
