Commenting on NHS England's announcement of a strategy to reduce the number of long hospital staysGeorge McNamara, Director of Policy at Independent Age, the older people’s charity, says:

"We welcome the new announcement of a strategy to further reduce the number of long hospital stays, as unnecessary bed stays are bad for patients and bad for the NHS. However, it needs to be clear how this will be achieved. For this to work, the government needs to ensure there are integrated health and social care provisions and patient-focussed support, not fragmented and complex structures. The government urgently needs to address the gaps in social care, which has been starved of vital funding, and make sure everyone leaving hospital who needs it is given support by trained social care staff to live safely at home again."
