Responding to research from Swansea University’s Centre for Innovative Ageing showing that older people are relatively safe on the roads compared with other age groups, Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Independent Age, said:

"This research clearly confirms previous evidence: older drivers as a group are as safe on the roads as any other group and in fact are safer than young drivers. Driving safely is usually not about having the fastest reaction speeds but about the having the knowledge and experience to keep yourself and other road users safe.

“Driving can be a vital part of staying independent and older people should not be subjected to unnecessary driving restrictions on the basis of misconceptions about their capabilities.”
