Responding to an Alzheimer’s Society’s report into dementia care in care homes, Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Independent Age, the older people’s charity, said:
“This investigation suggests older people are being robbed of their right to grow old with dignity, regularly being left bed-bound, incontinent or sedated. The care home market is already under pressure and the tens of thousands of pounds that GPs are charging homes will, ultimately, be passed onto older people and their families.
“This is not the NHS we all know and love – world class care, free at the point of the delivery. All too often vulnerable older people in care homes are getting a second-rate service and paying for the privilege. This must change.”
