In the run up to International Women’s Day, Independent Age has been drawing attention to some of the key issues that specifically affect older women. Valerie, 73, says that public transport plays a vital role in older women remaining independent:

“It is so important that I can get out and about, meet up with friends and stay active. Good public transport helps older women like me stay independent and healthy for longer. But bus services are under threat, which means that many more older women will be left feeling isolated and unable to access their doctor easily”
