Telephone Group Facilitator

Telephone Groups are free telephone-based social groups for anyone over the age of 65. The group calls help older people to build local connections with their peers, forging new friendships and tackling feelings of isolation and loneliness. They are especially good for older people who may struggle with feelings of loneliness or isolation, and are perhaps without the internet, housebound or unable to engage in face-to-face activities.

The groups are made up of 5-7 people over the age of 65 who live in the same local community. They participate in the group calls for up to six months to enjoy friendly conversation and share experiences. The aim is that within the six months, the participants will feel they have increased social connections and confidence, and we will provide tools and support for the group to consider maintaining their friendships independently of Independent Age, either over the phone or they can even consider meeting in person. Please note, we are currently piloting these groups in Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Clackmannanshire, South East London and Essex, with the hope of running them in more locations soon.

About the role

We need Telephone Group Facilitators who are based in Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Clackmannanshire, South East London or Essex to support a local telephone group for one group call a week for a period of six months. We would also like to invite those who have a connection to one of these areas to apply, for example, you have family there or you went to the local university. Your weekly calls will be at a set time each week, for one hour, within the hours of 10am – 6pm

The facilitator’s role is to make sure that our telephone groups run smoothly and ensure that all participants have a chance to have their say, enjoy meaningful conversation and make friends. In turn, we hope this will help the older people who take part to feel better connected to their community, feel more confident about their social life and less lonely and isolated.

This role involves

  •  Facilitating a telephone group of 5-7 older people
  • Helping the group to enjoy each other’s company and to make friends
  • Ensuring that the group is a welcoming place for all
  • Managing the practicalities of the call, including managing technical challenges and behaviour
  • Reporting any problems or concerns to Independent Age promptly

To be a Telephone Group Facilitator, you will need good listening and communication skills, the ability to handle personal data sensitively and confidently and confident IT skills. We will provide you with training to support you in your role.
