Community volunteer

Our community services team of dedicated staff and volunteers help isolated older people to re-build a fulfilling and independent social life and reduce feelings of loneliness.

We are focussed on connecting people aged 65+ in Essex, Nottingham and Middlesbrough with other people with similar interests and experiences. This includes connecting people with our own friendly volunteers; activities in their own communities and other local services that can be of help.

Independent Age’s community services are designed to achieve positive change in the lives of the older person by listening to what they need and shaping the support accordingly over an agreed time period. Our overall aim is for people to feel better connected both socially and to other forms of practical help, information and advice.

About the role

An amazing team of volunteers are supporting older people to achieve their desired goals. Our volunteers across Essex, Nottingham and Middlesbrough help older people to access services and activities in the community that they are interested in, accompanying and supporting them through the process. What you do as a Community Volunteer depends on the goals of the person that you’re connected with, but you could be involved with activities such as:

  • Supporting someone to get out and about in their community e.g. to go shopping, to a café or local garden centre.
  • Travelling with or driving someone to appointments.
  • Accompanying someone to a social group or activity.
  • Supporting someone with IT or technology, for example, with online shopping.
  • Going out for walks.
  • Supporting someone to become more active.

We ask that our Community Volunteers are able to support someone for 9 months. This is likely to be once a week but is flexible.
