Moving home can be emotionally and physically demanding, but if you plan properly you can reduce the stress. Our checklist can help you keep track of all the things you have to do.
The challenge of moving
Moving home is one of the most stressful things you can do. Mobility problems, long-term health conditions or simply having less energy as an older person can all make it difficult to deal with a move.
You will have to make lots of decisions, and you may need to deal with many different organisations, such as removal companies, estate agents, insurance companies and cleaners. Packing up a home that holds lots of memories can also be very emotional.
Careful planning and preparation can help things go smoothly and make your move a positive experience.
Start early
Allow yourself plenty of time. If possible, plan the clearing and packing over a long period, and do it in several sessions rather than one long one. Make sure you take lots of breaks, with food and water to stay hydrated.
Be realistic
If you’re moving into a smaller property, you’ll have to decide what will fit in your new home. You may want to hold on to things because they cost a lot, you think they may come in handy one day, or you’re saving them for children or grandchildren. But storing belongings is expensive.
You may be able to sell items you no longer want. You could also give things away or donate them to charity. It may be difficult to give away sentimental possessions, but often the memories and stories you have are more important.
Get help
Don’t be shy about asking family and friends for help. If you’re finding it hard to decide what to take, you could also hire a decluttering service. There are companies that can organise the whole move for you, or you can get help with specific tasks, such as cleaning or packing. You can find local specialist relocation services on housingcare.org.

Our checklist can help you plan your move. It might not cover everything, but you can tailor it to your own needs.
The timings may vary, depending on your circumstances, but it’s always a good idea to give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
