The challenge of moving
Moving home is one of the most stressful things you can do. As you get older you may feel you have less energy, you could be finding it harder to get around, or you may be living with a long-term health condition that can make it difficult to deal with a move.
There will be lots of decisions to make, and you could be dealing with many different organisations, such as removal companies, estate agents, insurance companies, cleaning companies. Packing up a home that holds lots of family memories can also be very emotional.
Careful planning and preparation can help things go smoothly and make your move a positive experience.
Allow yourself plenty of time. If possible, plan the clearing and packing over a long period, and do it in several sessions rather than one long one. Make sure you take lots of breaks, with food and water to stay hydrated.
If you’re moving into a smaller property, you’ll have to decide what will realistically fit in your new home. It’s common to hold on to things because they cost a lot, you think they may come in handy one day, or you’re saving them for children or grandchildren. But, paying for storage is expensive. You may be able to sell items you no longer want. You could also give things away or donate them to charity. It may be difficult to give away sentimental possessions, but often the memories and stories you have are more important.
Don’t be shy about asking family and friends to help you. If you’re finding it hard to decide what to take, you could also consider getting a neutral third party in to help. There are companies that can organise the whole move for you or you can get help with specific aspects of the move, such as decluttering, cleaning or packing.
