Independent Age social activities

Tsocial activities cambridge 2010 ??his new service offers people supported by Independent Age the opportunity to choose and participate in activities they enjoy and to meet other people in their local areas.  We've already held afternoon teas, cinema and theatre trips, lunches, garden centre visits and we're planning for much more!

Independent Age's programme of social activities is a free service to the people we help that:

• Supports older people to participate in a group or individual activities

• Encourages older people to be more independent, or regain the confidence to do the things they love

• Helps them to meet new people.

How it works:

We encourage participants to choose activities and events in discussion with our volunteers and each other.  These may be a day out, a theatre trip, an art class, or maybe just meeting other members of the charity for lunch.  It could also involve getting involved in a local group or club.

Our Aim:

Social activities will offer support that enables older people to have a more fulfilling social life and to participate in more local events in a manner that is sustainable.

Through our support we aim to reengage the people we support with the activities they love, and to encourage them to feel confident in telling us - and each other - the kind of activities and social events they enjoy.

By encouraging discussion about what people enjoy, and deciding on activities that are manageable for the whole group, we aim to help address the issues at the heart of isolation.  Naturally, being together with other older people can help to build enduring friendships that can further help participants to think about what support they may need to sustain regular contact.

In encouraging participation, we aim to be as flexible as possible in offering older people the chance to socialise with each other or to do activities they enjoy. This may involve local travel and we may be able to help with the cost.
